Officially, that is. The web has been humming with the news for quite some time – I blogged about it here.
Two new movies from the old masters of the world’s best animation studio will be released on the same day in the summer of 2013. Kaze Tachinu, said to be “loosely based” on a novel about the designer of Japan’s Zero fighter, is Hayao Miyazaki’s first solo project since Ponyo in 2008. Kaguya-hime no Monogatari is Isao Takahata’s first movie since 1999. The style of the poster art is reminiscent of that movie, Hohokekyo Tonari no Yamada-kun (My Neighbours the Yamadas), which broke new ground in the animation of colour washes and was one of Studio Ghibli’s most dazzling technical accomplishments.
It will be interesting to see how audiences react to these two films. There’s nothing on the websites yet apart from the posters and a rather lovely homespun creamy fabric backdrop for Kaze Tachinu.
Today also saw the announcement of the 2013 Golden Globe nominations. Neither Arrietty nor From Up On Poppy Hill made it off the shortlist.
