Switzerland’s Locarno International Film Festival and Italy’s National Cinema Museum in Turin have joined forces to present Manga Impact! The World of Japanese Animation, a special event at this year’s Festival, held from 5-15 August. The programme promises a major premiere plus restropectives covering the whole history of anime from earliest times to the present. There is a competition for short films “made in the manga style or inspired by the manga universe,” a brief sufficiently broad to encourage a wide range of entries.
So far, programme details are few but one very juicy prospect is a big screen showing for Gisaburo Sugii’s ravishing version of The Tale of Genji: that alone is worth the ticket. There will also be a book, which the organisers assert is “certain to become a key reference work”.
