Optimum Releasing have announced that their August 2009 UK release of Ocean Waves will premiere at the Japanese Art Festival in Richmond, Surrey on 11-12 July 2009. The Festival offers free admission so this is a rare chance to see a Ghibli movie for nothing. The BBFC has rated it PG.
The 1993 movie, originally screened on Japan’s NTV network, was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki. The Japanese title, Umi Ga Kikoeru, translates as I Can Hear The Ocean. The US release is also set for August.
Until now, the movie has only been available on the secondary market in an English subtitled version released in East Asia. It was not included in the landmark 1996 deal which allowed Disney to distribute Studio Ghibli movies outside Japan. Grave of the Fireflies, also excluded from the deal, was released in North America by Central Park Media and is to be re-released by AD Vision this year. The only film in the 1996 deal remaining to be released in the USA is Only Yesterday, which had its UK release in 2006.
